Biochar for Remediation

Biochar: A Green-Remediation approach for contaminated site cleanups

Among other agencies, the EPA has identified biochar as a Best Management Practice for green remediation practices at mining sites, particularly for reclaimed former mining lands. However, applying biochar for overall site remediation is relevant because biochar strongly sorbs various environmental contaminants, has a net negative CO₂ footprint, and is less costly (economically and environmentally) than many existing treatment methods.

The documents below underscore the importance of reducing the environmental footprint of contaminated site clean-up, reducing costs for taxpayers (who frequently pay for contaminated site remediations), and applying sustainable technologies.

Contaminants biochar addresses

Enhanced, wood-based biochar produced at high temperatures (>900 deg C) can sorb a variety of contaminants including:

Metals like lead, copper, and zinc.

Hydrophobic organic contaminants such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls and long-carbon chain per-and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS).

Biochar is the sustainable choice for a range of remediation challenges

Biochar effectively addresses various types of water and soil contamination, providing a sustainable, high-performance remediation solution.

mining

Mining

Biochar offers an innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective solution, making mine site remediation a more efficient and economically viable process.

stormwater

Stormwater

Biochar is a sustainable, versatile & cost-effective tool recognized as a Best Management Practice for comprehensive stormwater management.

soil

Soil

Biochar is an effective tool for mitigating contaminated soils by stabilizing, adsorbing, and reducing leaching of heavy metals, organic pollutants and Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Properties of
biochar:

Highly Adsorbent

Contaminants are naturally attracted to porous carbon.

Very Porous

A large amount of surface area for contaminants to adsorb to.

Biochar is
Carbon Negative:

Production & use sequesters carbon

Biochar extracts CO₂ that would have been released into the air.

Research & Case Studies

Early research shows promising results in tackling Emerging Contaminants with Biochar.

Myno Carbon Pure is a specialized biochar designed to tackle water and soil contamination, offering a sustainable and highly effective solution for environmental remediation. All our biochar products are produced from sustainably sourced, clean wood waste. The feedstock is pyrolyzed at ~900°C, ensuring a carbon content of 83-89%.

MYNO Carbon Pure Granulated Biochar

A sustainable and eco-friendly solution for remediation applications, Carbon Pure Granulated biochar is exceptional at adsorbing and immobilizing contaminants, due to its porous structure and high surface area, providing long-term stability and effectiveness for your projects.

Applications: detention vaults and infiltration ponds for stormwater, soil remediation, sediment remediation, mine site reclamation
