Case Study: Tata Steel Uses Biochar to Reduce Emissions
Using biochar to reach net zero by 2045
Indian Company, Tata Steel began a trial in January 2023 to make good on its sustainability commitments to reach net zero by 2045. To date, Tata has used biochar to replace around 30,000 tonnes of fossil fuels, by partially replacing pulverized coal injection, thus improving energy efficiency.
Results:
Tata’s innovation has the potential to reduce over 50,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. After successful trials in one Blast Furnace, the company has expanded to three others within the plant and plan to expand to other steelmaking sites in the future.
