Biochar for Agribusiness

Biochar supercharges yields

Biochar reduces fertilizer consumption, returns carbon to the soil, reduces overall emissions, and improves microbiome health. Biochar is a cost-effective solution that offers numerous agronomic benefits, including enhanced nutrient use efficiency (NUE), improved water retention, and better seasonal water availability—all of which contribute to higher yields.

Benefits

for Growers
15%

higher
yields

A meta-analysis conducted by Ye, L. et. al (2020) found biochar when combined with fertilizer increased yields by 15% on average. Over time, soil structure continues to improve and more nutrients are retained and made available for plant growth, giving way to even higher yields. The same study found yields to continued to increase up to 31% in year 3 and beyond.

20%

reduction in
fertilizer needs

Fertilizers are typically around 40% efficient— more than half of applied nutrients are lost to leaching, volatilization, or other factors. Biochar’s high porosity and surface area, retain nutrients, reduce nitrogen losses, increase microbial activity, and improve soil structure, all contributing to more nutrient uptake. Studies have shown it can enhance NUE by at least 12%. (Hossain et. al 2020, Khan et. al 2023, Li et. al 2023) This increased efficiency allows growers to initially use around 20% less fertilizer for the same agronomic benefit. (Gao, Y et al 2022) Thereafter, growers can use even less fertilizer as the health of the soil microbiome improves.

Benefits

for the Soil
38%

increase in
plant-available water

Biochar’s highly porous structure creates a greater surface area for water to adhere and in turn, high surface area increases its adsorption capacity and allows it to infiltrate the soil without leaching or pooling. This increases the seasonal availability of water which improves drought resilience and reduces irrigation costs. Dumroese et al. (2022) showed substantial 38%, 19%, and 16% increase in plant-available water in coarse, medium, and fine soils, respectively, after biochar applications.

22%

increase in
microbial biomass carbon

Microbial Biomass Carbon- the measure of carbon in living microbial biomass, is an indicator of soil health and microbial activity. Zhang and Wang (2024) report an MBC increase of 21.7% after applying biochar. The study also showed significant increases in key soil enzymes, that directly support microbial life through nutrient cycling. Together these increases indicate higher microbial activity and thus greater soil health (Daunoras et. al 2024).

Benefits

for the Planet
30%

reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions

Because of its porosity and ability to retain nutrients, while biochar makes nitrogen more available, it also mitigates harmful externalities of fertilizer use, like nutrient leaching, runoff, and nitrous oxide emissions, with Borchard et al. (2019) showing a 30% reduction on average, with the greatest impact on sandy soils.

2 units

of carbon per unit of
biochar stored in the soil

For every unit of Carbon Boost created, 2 units of CO₂ has been removed from the atmosphere and is permanently stored in your soil!

Aerates soil, optimizes pH, and creates a habitat for beneficial microbes.

Increases drought resilience during dry years.

Reduces need for nitrogen-based fertilizers, and associated emissions and leaching.

Biochar is less expensive than the products it displaces.

Biochar application methods

As a bulk amendment
Add Carbon Boost directly to soil as a bulk soil amendment on its own or combined with manure, lime etc. Apply our dry granular products with the dry spreader you already use.

As an efficiency-enhanced fertilizer (EEF):
Biochar is a great enhancement to fertilizer. When applied with fertilizer, biochar allows you to quickly realize all the benefits of an EEF and precision agriculture techniques. Our liquid formulas can be applied using the same equipment you already use. Apply with your liquid spreader or send our micronized liquid right through your fertigation system.

In biochar amended compost (BAC):
Biochar can be added and mixed directly into compost using the bulk amendment method or as part of the EEF method, with a fertilizer. BAC is initially treated as a covered aerated static pile (cASP), where it undergoes a thermophilic phase to mature before use.

Biochar is a powerful tool for a range of agribusiness sectors
