Neutralizing acidic mine tailings
The Formosa Mine, a former copper and silver mining site in Riddle, OR, designated an EPA Superfund site posed significant environmental and human health risks due to acidic, high-sulfide mine tailings. Biochar with lime was applied to the former mine site as a phytoremediation approach.
Results:
The study demonstrated that biochar effectively neutralized acidic mine tailings, improved soil chemistry, enhanced tree seedling growth, and showcased its potential for widespread application in restoring vegetation on mining impacted soils.
